Location: Fondazione Baruchello
The Fondazione Baruchello (Baruchello Foundation) was established by the artist Gianfranco Baruchello just outside the urban centre of Rome, in the very place where he had instituted one of the most radical and coherent experiments of his artistic practice: the Agricola Cornelia S.p.A. The Fondazione is only the most recent among the many projects that the artist has brought forward during the fifty years of his artistic life. It is, to this day, the space in which Baruchello works, makes projects and has set up his archive and library. The Baruchello Foundation holds and narrates within itself the body and expressive nature of the activity of one of the most important Italian artists of the twentieth century.
A protagonist of artistic research in the second half of the twentieth century, Gianfranco Baruchello has always considered art as a radical experiment. Through the use of various media and techniques, he practised painting, object/assemblage, writing, poetry, action. During his artistic career he founded fake companies, practised farming and zootechnics and made experimental films such as Il grado zero del paesaggio (1963) and La Verifica incerta (1964).

Ponte di Nona is a peripheral neighbourhood in the eastern part of Rome that clearly shows the results of recent public urban management. The neighbourhood is in fact one of the first in Rome to have been planned from scratch, according to a new type of convention between local authorities and constructors. With Tor tre Teste, it is one of the areas where the often contradictory endeavour to challenge today’s construction industry has crystallised. It is a collection of residential architectures entrusted to, at times, well-known architects featuring some decrepid but important attempts at monumental architecture.
Andrea Jemolo is an important Italian photographer of architecture. He has collaborated with some of the more significant architecture magazines, photographing the monumental works of the great modern and contemporary architects. Recently he has dedicated himself in particular to investigating the architecture of the Roman periphery with the creation of a “photographic bank” on residential architecture from the last twenty years in Rome.

The meeting with Miltos Manetas is based on his recent project “Medio Sud” (“Middle South”), in which he assumes an ideal geographic area defined as an hybrid in relation to the extended concepts of North and South of the world. For Manetas Rome is the capital of this South and, at the same time, the boundary of that ideal area.
Miltos Manetas is a greek artist whose work explores the representation and the aesthetics of the information society. Active in the field of new media, Manetas is the founder of NEEN, an international network of creative minds which includes theorists, artists, programmers, architects, designers, composers, editors, whose aim it is to make use of new technologies as tool and subject of their own creativity in a non-pre-ordered way.

Pratica del luogo (Practice of Place) Luca Vitone began in 1992 to use food as his means of expression in order to set up certain investigations into places. In 1997, with Liberi Tutti! (Everyone Free! ), he created an itinerary to discover the more marginal places of the urban space of Rome, referencing the history of the anarchic movement. For OPEN DOORS ROMA Vitone decides to return to the theme of material culture by looking at the city through the filter of food: to meet sitting around a table, in a convivial way, offers the opportunity to experience a journey of knowledge within a collective memory. A conversation is articulated through food as a way of mapping historical and personal journeys.
Luca Vitone’s work challenges the entirety of the mechanisms that connect contemporary people, subjected to continuous transformations, to their place of origin and the environment with which they enter into relation. After abandoning traditional modes of artistic expression, Vitone chose to think of his works, which are often actions or installations, with instruments that are typical of other disciplines, such as geography, anthropology, sociology, music and literature. In general in his work there is a constant attempt at identifying the way in which it might be possible to represent the legacy of a tradition or of a particular historical or social event today.

An encounter seen as a metropolitan walk, between science and anecdotes. A useful exploration to understand the possibilities of modifying one’s own perception with regard to a complex entity such as the city of Rome, taking its oldest, most overlayed and complex body as its object of contemplation: the old town centre. The walk will also become an occasion to resolve one or more practical problems, with hints towards a number of contemporary strategies.
Max Renkel is a German artist and collector who has lived in Rome for many years. A polymorphous artist, Renkel is in dialogue with the tradition of painting and drawing in a personal style, between abstract and figurative, focusing on the rapport between shape and colour. Beyond his artistic activity, Renkel owns and collects in a quasi-maniacal fashion photographs, art books and ephemera connected to various themes and subjects. It is in fact due to this spontaneous and constant activity that, although a foreigner, Renkel has traced his own map of the city of Rome over time.
